I would never have thought of painting the woodwork black in a kitchen, but it looks so effective, you never know, I might try it! Your kitchen already looks fantastic!
Innovative and interesting. Love it! The kitchen looks terrific. Have you ever thought of going to Interior Decorators courses and working at it professionally. You should.
Fabulous! You've been busting your tail - how do you find the energy to do all this? Why was the wall behind the refrigerator painted black? How did you manage to cover that up? Is that a wide-plank wall? No accounting for the tastes of other people, I reckon. You say "vintage wall paper from the 1940s" - surely it isn't from that era? You bought it new, right?
I would love to go into interior decorating but like writing or horse training, the other fun jobs that everyone wants to do, it's hard to find work. Paying work. Maybe I could write a book about decorating? I always do it on the cheap.
Jeff, that IS real 1940s wallpaper! It's brand new; been sitting around all these years. A company called Hannah's Treasures sells it. It's more expensive than new wallpaper and trickier to put up because it's very delicate, but luckily we only had to do one wall. I got a lot of bang for the buck with that wallpaper because it gives the kitchen that original, old-fashioned feel I wanted.
That wall wasn't actually black. It was dark, dark brown. Yes, those are wide planks. They were popular in the 70s. Now if it was knotty pine, I wouldn't have painted it. But it was ugly. I have to say that Lowe's Valspar paint is really good. It took one coat of primer, one coat of the Depression green, and a second quickie coat of the green. Soon I will post views of the other half of the room. We're doing some interesting things on that side too. It's a big kitchen!
Well, I'm glad I clicked here (even though I already commented below on your beautiful work) since you answered (with Jeff) the question I asked about the wallpaper. It really is so pretty and so perfect for that kitchen. Very nice, Debi.
I was born in an inner city. It took me 43 years to become a country girl, but here I am. Now I spend my days riding and writing.
My work has appeared in Mid-American Review, Horse News, Horse Illustrated, California Horse Review, The Franklin News-Post, The Courier, Asbury Park Press, Pet Tales and other places.
I won the New Jersey Library Association Writers Contest about what the library means to me, was a runner-up in Mademoiselle's annual short story contest, and won the talent award in the Miss Middletown Beauty Pageant by reading one of my stories.
