A Man's Truck

There is a man’s truck in the driveway. It’s a big suped-up electric blue Chevy. It’s got some kind of thing on the hood like the engine is so big it’s busting out of it like a heart busting out of a lovesick cartoon character’s chest. I expect to hear it go boing!

The driver of this truck is one of the boys who is in hot pursuit of Kelly. This one is making some headway because she hasn’t allowed any of the others to come over. I like her taste in men. She picks the ones who are nice. This character (that’s what Kurt calls them—characters) brings her gifts. When she mentioned she liked Sour Patch Kids, he came to school the next day and brought her two packages of the candy. Two. I thought, this kid means business.

When she mentioned she liked Miranda Lambert, he got tickets for the concert and didn’t protest when I said I would drive them, even though he drives. He offered to put down my mulch. And he wouldn’t take any money for moving my stall mats.

But he’s a man! I look at that truck and think my baby’s growing up.

This guy sounds very nice and he's really trying hard to make a good impression. It's a cool truck for a kid to have but I like that you drove them to the concert with no hassle. Trust me I know it's hard when they start to date and go out on their own. Somehow we all make it through even when we think we won't.

That young man sounds like a keeper! The keepers are the ones you worry about for just THAT reason, I know!

But that one looks a good 'un!

He sounds like a winner. But of course you're the mom, you're supposed to worry.

Oh my! When the boys come around my girls like this, it's my heart that does the exploding out of my chest. It's both wonderful and scary all at the same time. It's great that you trust your daughter to choose wisely and she has all the great raising of her parents to draw from. He knows she's a special girl and his respect for all of you shows that.

I don't know what to say, so I'll just say this: :-D

Awww...they DO grow up fast, don't they? I still can't believe sometimes that my babygirl is married---almost a year now! But he really does sound like a fine young man, Debi. He'd sure win my heart if he spread my mulch.

Sounds like a good kid. What grade will Kelly be in this fall?

You asked about my friend, Renee, on my blog. She was one of my riding friends, camped with us occasionally and one of the most happy, blissful people I knew. This past December a mutual friend of ours called and told me she just heard Renee had passed away. She had been sick with a cold, taking meds ... nothing out of the ordinary and then she collapsed. LifeFlight was called but she didn't make it. Pulmonary embolism (blood clot). She was 48 yrs old. Her son was graduating the same day as mine. Her daughter is getting married this month. You just never know...

My other baby is 29. The day I posted this was actually her birthday. Hard to believe. Yes, it goes really fast.

Tammy, Kelly is a sophomore. Two more years of high school. When we couldn't sell the house in Virginia, I was getting worried we wouldn't get here in time for her to make connections and friends.

I'm so sorry about your friend. That's really sad. Just like that. We need to always remember to live life.

Gosh they grow up so fast. I am so glad Kelly is a smart girl. And that she has a smart mom. P.S. That is some truck.

At a certain point, you have to just hope that all your good advice sank in. lol. A kid who is willing to help pitch in for "no compensation" other than a meal.. has learned that you are a much more welcome visitor when you add more value than you take away. No one wants a mooch just hanging around helping your daughter empty the pantry..lol.

haha...isn't your baby going to say "ma! you're embarrassing me!" if she ever reads these stories about her blossoming romances?

Jamie, embarrassing your progeny is one of the most important(OK, yes,I admit, AND fulfilling) jobs a parent can undertake. How can a person become a well rounded and empathetic being if they haven't experienced the abashed and blush-ful feelings that come from a parental figure saying embarrassing things about one's self? Why, if your mum hasn't been embarrassing for you, at least once in awhile, then she isn't doing her job properly! I, personally, do a bang-up job of being embarrassing for my daughter. I'm a great mother in that aspect.
