My husband used to go there when he was a Roanoke College student almsot 30 years ago! We went a couple of years ago and it had a great bar atmosphere. Pretty rough around the edges, drinks are strong, menu full of good greasy stuff, no interior designer been around for years.

These days we are way too old and tired to head to a bar. Just come on over to our place. The food is better. I just read a book by John Holgate and a lot of their rural life revolved around stories told and advice given in the little pub. They too had a church on every corner - however, between each church was a bar and most of them had 'dancing girls'. The the churches were very fire and brimstone - repent or die - and such. I figured you could get quite drunk at the nudie bar then stagger to the church in the morning and be absolved?? They also sold cold beer and ammunition at the gas station. Had to love it. Oh yes, the city fathers, after a six month study, were determining the size of the pasties the girl had to wear when dancing. Having grown up in California - especially in the San Francisco area with the strip bars on Broadway and liquor easy to get in 8th grade, the gov't being involved in any of this is so strange to me but of course, quite fascinating. Thanks for another great post!!!Love My Doghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00427595028405688276noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1779328319254618990.post-76571325780895047602009-02-16T09:14:00.000-05:002009-02-16T09:14:00.000-05:00it is very similar out here in ohio, where i live....it is very similar out here in ohio, where i live. although there is a college town near us, where there is 20-some bars on one street, all the towns near it have a church in town (no matter how small the town) and it is unlikely you will come across a bar.

when i moved from delaware to virginia, i thought it was the weirdest thing that you could buy beer in grocery stores. you can't do that in delaware, where anything that contains alcohol has to be bought at a liquor store.

it is definitely interesting the differences state to state and town to town...Heatherhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17072571120206407487noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1779328319254618990.post-14587574371527499862009-02-14T16:27:00.000-05:002009-02-14T16:27:00.000-05:00That's true, there are a few similarities between ...That's true, there are a few similarities between bars and churches, not just their corner locations. Yes indeed, lost souls in both places. There really is a schizophrenic attitude towards alcohol in the South. I got into a discussion about Floyd Fest with a friend one time and she said that she couldn't go to it because there was too much beer and wine served there. But how did she spend that very same afternoon while the patrons of Floyd Fest were happily quaffing craft beers and savoring local wines? Why, getting plastered imbibing mixed drinks while lying in a lounge chair in the middle of the creek that goes through her property!

Wonderful post, Debi - maybe you should pursue that interest in cultural anthropology in more depth!
